When people hear "chemical peel," they often think of that Sex & the City episode. Ya know...the one where Samantha’s face is cherry red. While some really deep, strong peels can have this effect, there are also a lot of more modern peels that don't cause as much trauma to the skin!
It's totally understandable that someone might have the misconception that their skin is going to visibly peel off with this type of treatment. Afterall, the word "peel" is literally in the name. However, many peels work at a microscopic level to exfoliate and sometimes even hydrate the skin! Here at JGD Salon (located in Hilton, NY), we use a line of chemical peels that are highly effective WITHOUT the dramatic peeling. That means no downtime, no PTO, and no showing up to your son's football game looking like a shedding reptile!! A gentle peel is such an incredible exfoliating facial treatment...and Fall is the best time to do it!
How do Chemical Peels Work?
Different acids work on the surface of the skin to break down desmosomes, the proteins that hold dead skin cells together, allowing them to slough off.
Some acids can actually lift out hyperpigmentation by breaking down melanin deposits near the surface of the skin (think of sun spots).
Chemical peels can also increase collagen production in your skin. This is because a peel is actually creating a controlled type of injury to the skin, which triggers your body's natural healing mechanism. Increased fibroblast activity & cell turnover = glowing, more youthful looking skin.
By removing the outermost layer of dead skin cells, your serums and moisturizer are able to penetrate deeper, allowing them to work to their full potential.
The science behind No-Peel Peels
Chemical peels have been around for a long time, and they've always been fabulous. However, some of them require significant down time. Not everyone has the time or desire for that! By combining acids with other buffering ingredients like kojic acid and hydrogen peroxide, we are able to achieve the same results without the surface irritation. Professional skincare in Hilton NY shouldn't be scary!
Common skin concerns that Chemical Peels can Help with:
Dullness
Acne
Fine lines and wrinkles
Hyperpigmentation
Texture concerns
Dry, Flaky, tired looking skin
Whether you're in your 20's, 40's, 60's or beyond...there's a peel that fits your skin goals!
What to Expect
If you're in the Hilton, NY or surrounding Rochester, NY area and are considering booking a chemical peel with us, here's what you can expect!
Before the Appointment: We highly recommend booking a Signature Facial before exploring peels. We use enzyme exfoliation in our facials, and this is a fantastic way to prep your skin and ensure your skin can handle a peel.
Consultation: Each chemical peel begins with a consultation. Not everyone is a good candidate, especially if you have preexisting irritation, plan to be in the sun within the next couple of weeks, or maybe you've been on Accutane recently. Our licensed professional will go through a consultation form to determine if your skin is in good condition for a peel, and if so, which peel is best for you.
Treatment: Once your treatment has been decided on by your esthetician, you'll be brought into one of our cozy treatment rooms and asked to lay down on the bed. We have relaxing music playing, heating pads on our beds, and dim lights to keep the ambiance as relaxing as possible. Your esthetician will cleanse and prep your skin before applying the peel with a soft brush or gauze pads. While our peels are generally non-irritating, some people do feel a slight warm tingle (a 2/10 on average), so we have handheld fans to keep you comfortable. After the allotted time, your esthetician will remove the peel before applying an SPF to protect your freshly treated skin from UVA rays.
Aftercare: After your treatment is complete, your esthetician will go over aftercare instructions with you. You skin will need a little extra TLC over the next 1-2 weeks, so a list of product recommendations to support your post peel skincare will be personalized just for you.
What NOT to Expect:
Visible Peeling: There might be some mild flakiness around days 3-5 post peel, but sheet peeling is not typical with our gentle peels. And remember! Visible peeling is not a gauge of effectiveness- it's just one type of response.
Professional Guidance: From consultation all the way through to post-care, our estheticians are here for you. Have a question about your skin response? Give us a call or text at 585-515-3434 and we're happy to help.
Better Results with Consistency: You'll get a lovely short term glow with one peel. The real magic happens with a series of 4-6 peels spread out over the course of a few months. That's how you can achieve long-lasting, glowing results.
